I am writing a Book Review after a very long time. I recently came across this un-put-downable debut novel by Alex Finlay (a penname) and less than half way through it, decided I got to write a recommendation of reading it to everyone like me who is on a constant lookout of an ingeniously clever suspenseful story.
What do you do when you are confronted by your Every Last
Fear? Do you give up or you fight like hell? Won’t you be ready to do every
damn thing to protect your family?
There are parts, in the book, where you will feel an adrenaline rush, in some, your
heart would melt while at times it would completely break. Such is the
masterful artwork by the author.
The story line proceeds depicting two different time frames,
constantly jumping between the two. I generally don’t prefer this style because
this has an inherent risk of reader getting confused about the flow of events
in the story; and subsequently, loses interest in the story. But the story-line
jumps in this one, somehow magically keep readers glued and wanting for more!
The story is about a family of 4 siblings and their parents.
The event of deaths of the parents, a smart girl & almost the hero of the
book, Maggie, and a funny 6-years old boy Tommy, divides the book into BEFORE
and AFTER timelines. However, the life of the family (before the tragic deaths)
is shown as a brutal contrast from happy
to becoming a miserable quest, after the release of a Netflix documentary,
about the eldest kid, Danny's imprisonment for murder.
Is Danny a murderer? Was there any murder at all, at the first place? Is the deaths of family members in Mexico, an accident or a multiple homicide?
The potential of the novel is such that I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a movie adoption.
So before it happens, GO, get the book and get ready to be gripped!
